The Art of Connection: How Dr. Lisa Koenigsberg Bridges History, Craft, and Consciousness. New York, N.Y.

Dr. Lisa Koenigsberg

Guardian of visual culture, Dr. Lisa Koenigsberg shapes the future through the past. As the soul behind Initiatives in Art and Culture (IAC), her vision champions the authentic, the sustainable, and the beautifully made.

Following her tenure at NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies – where she developed innovative, multidisciplinary arts programming as an adjunct professor and Director of Programs in the Arts – Koenigsberg founded Initiatives in Art and Culture (IAC).

Under her visionary direction, IAC serves as a vital, independent forum dedicated to visual culture, heritage, and the decorative arts. Koenigsberg’s curatorial philosophy firmly rejects the traditional hierarchy that places craft beneath fine art. Instead, she views them as inextricably linked, maintaining that creative “dreams” and inspiration must be masterfully crafted to realize true artistry.

For over two decades, she has shaped IAC’s multi-disciplinary conferences and digital initiatives. Her career also includes leadership and faculty roles at major museums, and the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Koenigsberg’s scholarship has been widely published in foundational text as The Art of Collecting (ed. D. Jensen), Auspicious Vision: Edward Wales Root and American Modernism, Architecture: A Place for Women (eds. E. P. Berkeley and M. McQuaid), The Gilded Edge: The Art of the Frame (ed. E. Wilner), in journals such as Gems and Jewellery (the publication of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain), American Art Journal,Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, and Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, as well as in magazines and in Trendvision’s Trendbook.

A compelling orator and convener, her voice resonates across global stages. Through curated symposia and academic sessions, she bridges institutions and continents – fostering dynamic intellectual exchange across the world’s leading universities, museums, and professional spheres, including at the State Art Collections of Dresden, NYU, City University Graduate Center, the Smithsonian Institution, the Norton Museum of Art, and the United Nations, and has organized and chaired sessions at the American Association of Museums, the Goldsmiths’ Company (London), the Society of Architectural Historians, Yale University Art Gallery, the Aspen Institute, and the Jewelry Industry Summit and at JCK.

An alumna of The Johns Hopkins University, she earned her Ph.D. from Yale University. Her dedication to historic preservation and material culture is reflected in her leadership roles: she is a trustee of Chicago’s Glessner House, president emerita and trustee of the Morris–Jumel Mansion, vice president of the New York Silver Society, and a past advisory board member of Ethical Metalsmiths.
