“With three beautiful daughters and a stunning wife, the subject of trafficking is something that it’s on my mind more than I’d like to admit. I wrote this script with the hopes of scaring people a bit into action after my church really brought this to the forefront. I feel we often think these things happen far away and the victims and perpetrators are somewhat faceless. I think in Betrayed we bring these issues to your doorstep. We had some absolutely amazing and electric performances and I am super proud of my cast and crew for this, it took some blood, sweat and tears to get this made but it was worth it!”, said director Wallen.

LA Premiere of Director Jeremy Guy’s “Purdah”

(HOLLYWOOD PRESS CORPS) — Los Angeles, CA — Thursday, May 31st, 2018 — Director and cinematographer Jeremy Guy presents his feature documentary directorial debut with “Purdah” (“Veil”) — the inspiring story of a young Indian woman who trades her burka for dreams of playing on the Mumbai Senior Women’s Cricket Team and how the harsh realities for women in her country creates an unexpected outcome for her own family, ultimately shattering and fueling aspirations. The film is an Official Selection in competition at the internationally renowned Dances With Films festival, featuring its Los Angeles Premiere Screening at the world famous TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. The film recently held its World Premiere at Cinequest Film Festival where it was called a “a real life Bend It Like Beckham” by KQED-FM (NPR).

From “Purdah” (“Veil”)

Director Jeremy Guy says, “I was working on another film in India when I met Kaikasha Mirza. Her pursuit of a career in cricket as a woman, which is frowned upon by her Muslim community, was a fascinating story in itself. And then, as I began shooting, the story took a surprising turn, and an even bigger story began to unravel about the challenges that Kaikasha, her two sisters and their mother faced amidst societal oppression.”

From “Purdah” (“Veil”)

The three independent-minded Mirza sisters have ambitious dreams for their lives and careers. Despite their earnestness, they face an uphill battle coming from a conservative Muslim family in Mumbai, India.
Kaikasha Mirza became enamored with cricket as a young woman, yet she was forbidden to play and forced to be a spectator in her burka, but she eventually persuades her father to allow her to remove her burka to become one of only a few Muslim women cricketers in all of Mumbai. She chases her dream of playing for the prestigious Mumbai Senior Women’s Cricket Team, but her parents give her the ultimatum that she will have two years to become a professional cricketer—or they will arrange her marriage.

From “Purdah” (“Veil”)

Kaikasha’s eldest sister, Saba, has her own dreams for her career and yearns to become a model, and Heena, the youngest sister, wants to be a fashion designer or a singer, but poverty may impede their pursuits. All three girls and their mother must contend with the wishes of their father who does not believe women should work, but rather, stay home to cook, clean and raise a family.

From “Purdah” (“Veil”)

As the women pursue their dreams, a series of shocking and tragic circumstances befall the Mirza family, and the film continues to follow each of them as they battle through family crises, poverty, and intense societal pressures.
This cinematic journey highlights how dreaming the impossible dream and having a passionate purpose can potentially save us. This story of perseverance lands on the message that even if things don’t turn out as we had hoped or planned, it’s about how we react to overcome life’s biggest challenges that makes all the difference.

Hybristophilia Chock Full of Thrills and Stars

The premiere for the much anticipated “Hybristophilia,” written and directed by talented filmmaker Romane Simon premiered in Beverly Hills recently with a star studded cast with the likes of Quinton Aaron, Sadie Katz, Jenna Willis, Massi Furlan, Lilian Lev, Alexis Nichols, Sara Hedgren and Iyad Hajjaj and others.

After he impressed the universe with his performance as football player Michael Oher (“Big Mike”) in the Oscar winning film The Blind Side,  Aaron has gone on to have an impressive acting career in the areas of both cinema and television.

From left to right: Actor Quinton Aaron, Filmmaker Romane Simon and Actor Alexander Man

Hybristophilia (the word basically describes sexual attraction to people who have committed atrocious acts) is about a camera crew who travel at their own risk to a remote and possibly haunted farmhouse to interview a notorious serial killer.

Still of actresses Jenna Willis and Sadie Katz

This film opens on an ambitious news team arrives at a secluded farmhouse for an exclusive interview with an at-large serial killer known as the Sleepy Stalker, a murderer known for attacking “sleepy” small towns. The news crew includes a hotshot young female reporter as well as the team’s guest expert: a psychologist noted for her expertise in psychopaths. They all soon discover that the farmhouse was the site of a grisly murder-suicide thirty years earlier and is now believed to be haunted. What I really enjoyed was that this film had the viewer on the edge of their seat and was so suspenseful.

Syndicate Smasher Has a Smashing World Premiere

Legendary martial arts/action stars came out in droves to support the sold out world premiere of Syndicate Smasher at the Downtown Independent Theater on March 11th! In addition to the cast, celebrities in attendance were Hank Garrett (3 Days of the Condor, G.I. Joe, The Animated Series), Don “The Dragon” Wilson (Blood Fist, The Martial Arts Kid), Robin Shou (Mortal Kombat), Aki Aleong (Missing in Action: Part 3, The Quest) and many others.

“It is definitely a ‘multiple Mob; ie. Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Russian etc. vs Special Forces movie and, if you like lots of action, check it out!,” said Don “The Dragon” Wilson, three time WKA World Kickboxing Champion and holder of 10 world kickboxing titles in 3 different weight classes.

“Syndicate Smasher is one of the best action films I’ve seen in years with a great story and well developed characters the audience can truly care about,” said iconic actor Hank Garrett, Martial Arts, Weightlifting and Wrestling Hall of Famer.

Noted Indonesian filmmaker and producer Benny Tjandra of New GenerAsian Films collaborated on this much anticipated crime thriller that is loosely based on a true story with co-director and writer Doug Tochioka.

Tochioka’s script joins legendary cult star and Martial Arts Hall of Famer Mel Novak (Bruce Lee’s Game Of Death, Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance) with action heroine extraordinaire Laurene Landon (Maniac Cop opposite Bruce Campbell and Sky opposite Norman Reedus), actors Joe Estevez (Dexter) and Arthur Roberts (Not of This Earth, Revenge of the Ninja), David Prak (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End) as well as multi award-winning actor/filmmaker Thomas J. Churchill (Check Point, The Rack Pack) and more for a story centered on a group of mercenaries, initially hired as contract killers, who find themselves targets of four powerful crime organizations and families. Guns go ablaze in this action packed tour-de-force, which presents an otherwise appealing little jewel for action movie aficionados.

“This film has the most guns, the most shots, and the most gangsters all in one movie fighting and shooting each other ever,” said Tjandra.

Celebrated gangster fight exploitative martial arts figure Mel Novak is the ultimate bad guy and  mortal enemy of every gangster mob outfit in the world———-” I kill em all, says Novak chuckling——that is The Chinese Triad, The Mafia, the Italians, The Russians, The Japanese all in one film!!”

Mel Novak , whose career has spanned over 30 years, has been in hundreds of films. ” I have killed and been killed by the likes of legendary martial artist and screen legend; Bruce Lee in his epic, “Game of Death” and Chuck Norris in “An Eye for An Eye” and the late, great  Jim Kelley in cult classic “Black Belt Jones.”

Tall, leggy and extremely well-built statuesque blonde, Landon has enlivened a bunch of hugely enjoyable movies with her spunky energy, physical dexterity, bubbly, upbeat personality and considerable sex appeal. She often portrays tough, two-fisted, no-nonsense action heroines with a winning blend of fiery aplomb and cheerful good humor and definitely plays that role to the hilt in this film as the feisty Detective Carol Driscoll.

Churchill gives a great performance in a great character role as the fast talking Andy and Estevez is great as Detective James Beattie. Roberts is wonderful as hard nosed Chief Timothy Darcy. Rounding out the cast is David Prak (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End) as Dara.

Although this film stars many of the same stars as Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance, such as Novak, Landon, Churchill and others, this is a completely different kind of film.

Based loosely on a true story, and buttressed by unbelievable special effects, if you come up against Novak, Landon, Churchill and Estevez, it is a death wish as you will get smashed–SYNDICATE SMASHED! Don’t miss it! This film is a great choice for action junkies to get their shoot ’em up binge fix.

Comic Con 2016

Do you ever wish to save the entire world with cool superpowers and tight spandex like I do? The answer should be yes. Otherwise you may be living in another dimension were pop culture doesn’t exist because every human living in the 21st-century on planet Earth is obsessed with space raccoons, storm troopers and meta humans.
Just go to the Paris Comic Con and you’ll understand. This year, cosplayers from all around the world joined forces to showcase their best costumes. From Jedis to Harley Quinn and the Joker, every cosplayer had their unique style, walking among the visitors and taking selfies with them.

I had the chance to cover the first day (October 21st) of the 2016 Paris Comic Con and be part of this intense 3 day exhilarating convention.
The convention center opens at 9:30 am and arriving early is the best way to beat the crowd and avoid the long lines that start to form rapidly at animation booths. You could take pictures with BB-8, stormtroopers or even get a polaroid photo of you at the Instax by Fujifilm booth.

The VR experience was also popular. The PS4 instalment allowed visitors to fight crime as Batman and the Partouche Booth offered a Roller Blaster 4D experience.

Canal was a generous exhibitor, handing out bags and entertaining visitors with quizzes and opportunities to win gifts.
Many exhibitors not only promoted their brand and merchandise, but they were also eager to share their passion. Figurines, t-shirts, comics and costumes were a big hit among fans.

Even if you left your light sabre at home (because of safety regulations of course) you’ll have plenty of opportunities to demonstrate how well you use the force. There was a light sabre initiation proposed by the Light Sabre Sport League and many other opportunities to get your hands on one.

Light sabre initiation. Photo by Laurie Le Bomin.

There were plenty of Star Wars themed activities; ranging from photos to conferences.
I attended the masterclass delivered by Lorne Peterson, FX artist. He created most of the models for Star Wars. He shared his experience with humour and gave us funny behind-the-scenes anecdotes.

Lorne Peterson. Photo by Laurie Le Bomin.

At lunch time, superheroes get hungry as you’ll witness spidermen and batmen waiting in line to get a hot dog or fresh crepes at the food corner. I decided to try Japanese delicacies. I even treated myself to a freshly baked matcha and dark chocolate cookie.
To feed another hunger, the one for series and movies, I went to see the Warner Bros. Television event which projected trailers for up and coming movies and the first episode of the Season 3 of the Flash. After that, the pilot episode of Supergirl was on the menu.

img_6551.jpg

Erik Larsen, illustrator known for his work on Spider-Man Marvel and other comics gave a conference. Visitors got to discover his career at the Masterclass room.

Other talents were here; actress Eliza Dushku, costume designer for Agent Carter Giovanna Melton, actress Carice Van Houten, cosplayer Leeanna Vamp, comic artist Trevor Hairsine, HBO storyboarder William Simpson…

The highlight of the day was the Luke Cage panel. Actor Mike Colter, costume designer Stephanie Maslansky and illustrator Shawn Martinbrough gave us an insight of the creation of the new Netflix show. Everyone was listening attentively to the interesting process of how the character was brought to the screen.

Luke Cage Panel. Photo by Laurie Le Bomin.

After clapping my hands cheerfully to several rounds of applause, I went to the mezzanine floor of the convention center. The atmosphere was laid-back and intimate. Illustrators were signing books or artwork and connecting with their fans.

I came across the Fusion Designs Caricatures booth. These guys offered amazing artwork.

To end the day on a good note, I attended the Premiere of the movie Arrival. It was such a compelling movie. The kind that makes such an impactful impression on you that you want to see it again. Just like how badly you want to go to Comic Con again next year!

The opening day of the Comic Con 2016 in Paris was a gathering of visitors and die hard fans wearing spandex and other cool costumes. At the masterclasses and other conferences, we had the chance to listen to professionals who described us how they created these great projects. We also got to see an exclusive of the Arrival, never shown before. Comic Con 2016 was a marvellous experience. Hollywood Press Corps is looking forward to the third edition next year.
