Acclaimed Croatian singer-songwriter and actress Elis Lovrić has made her New York City debut, captivating all of us with her soulful blend of contemporary folk, poignant storytelling, and theatrical flair.
Renowned in her homeland as the “Istrian Fairy,” Lovrić brings a deeply personal performance style that bridges rich regional heritage with universal themes.
Performing in her native Labinjonska čakavica dialect alongside translations in English and other languages, her raw acoustic sound paired with her emotive vocal delivery offers an intimate, transcendent experience that resonates far beyond cultural boundaries.
The dialect is Labin Cakavica (or Labinska cakavica), a rare and ancient Čakavian idiom spoken in and around the town of Labin in Istria, Croatia. In 2019, Labin Cakavica was officially granted status as a Protected Intangible Cultural Property / Heritage of Croatia. Elis Lovrić is its cultural ambassador.
Her inaugural New York showcased materials from her celebrated discography, including projects like Merika and Kanat od mora, which weave intricate melodies with themes of longing, freedom, and love. By blending acoustic guitar with humorous, warm audience interaction and theatrical grace, Lovrić’s live set delivers far more than a typical concert but a cultural dialogue. Her debut marked an exciting new chapter in her international career, introducing Gotham’s vibrant music scene to one of the Adriatic’s most compelling folk voices.
Curated by Walter Krochmal, founder of Bronx World Film and a pioneering art house presenter, the afternoon opened with five contemporary Croatian shorts. Krochmal is an avid promoter of Croatian cinema since its inception in 2011, and partner with the Croatia-based International Sound and Film Music Festival.
