Burak Tatar is curating The 30TH Annual LOWER EAST SIDE FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS this weekend in NYC. You can catch it for FREE, this Memorial Weekend (MAY 23, 24, 25, 2025 – Friday, Saturday, Sunday). It is a mix of movies and theater. My favorite movie on Saturday was THE GENDER SYMPHONY.
Multidisciplinary artist and filmaker Phoebe Legere’s movie THE GENDER SYMPHONY (2024), is a whimsical and psychedelic exploration of identity, power, and transformation, filmed on the streets of Venice, Italy.

The story follows Columbina, a hapless servant, who toils under the tyrannical Dr. Pants, an alchemist obsessed with wealth. When Dr. Pants’s incantation for riches summons a powerful witch instead of gold, Columbina takes matters into her own hands, transforming into an elegant Venetian courtier and challenging Dr. Pants to a duel that alters both their lives.
Legere, who wrote, directed, and scored the film, used Commedia dell’Arte as a style to comment on contemporary “Politics of the Body”.
The film has garnered international awards and is described by Legere as “Multidisciplinary, LGBTQA+,” with an emotional core rooted in the platonic love between a masculine-of-center, queer woman and a highly sensitive, creative gay man.
