“Lady Patriot” play at Theatre Row NYC:  Sept 9 to 20

“Lady Patriot” is an upcoming Off-Broadway play written and directed by Ted Lange, best known for his role on “The Love Boat.”

The play, which runs for a limited engagement at Theatre Row from September 9 to 20, reunites Lange with his “Love Boat” co-stars Fred Grandy and Jill Whelan, in an ensemble that includes Josie DiVincenzo, Gordon Goodman, Chrystee Pharris, Derek Powell, and Count Stovall.

After the play, Ted Lange, director and writer of Lady Patriot asked us all to stay and said: “It is Black Theater Night: ask questions and let’s discuss!”.

Ted Lange’s play Lady Patriot was written over a decade ago, with an eBook version published in 2013. A production of the play also ran in Richmond, Virginia, in May 2014.

Lange read 27 books to write the play and his research for his novel Lady Patriot involved visiting the Gullah region of the South Carolina Lowcountry, particularly the Sea Islands, to immerse himself in the culture of the Gullah people for a true and accurate portrayal of the historical period. He spent time there conducting interviews and gathering information to capture the essence of the Gullah way of life, which is reflected in the novel.

If you are tired of the poor writing and predictable plots from services like Netflix, Disney, Paramount, and Amazon, the play ‘Lady Patriot’ is for you.

Expect historical accuracy, and you’ll hear many expressions used during that period of American history.

The plot centers on a Civil War mystery: a spy is leaking information from the inner circle of Confederate president Jefferson Davis, and the play explores the prejudices and patriotism of three historical women, including Union spies Elizabeth Van Lew and Mary Bowser.

Who was Jefferson Davis?

Jefferson Davis was a significant figure in American history and did serve as a president, but he was not the president of the United States. He was the first and only president of the Confederate States of America, a separate political entity formed by the southern states that seceded from the Union during the Civil War.

Why you should see “Lady Patriot” ?

A grave silence has fallen over the inner circle of Confederate president Jefferson Davis. A hidden fissure has appeared, and vital intelligence now seeps to the enemy. Suspicion poisons the air, for the traitor’s identity remains a phantom—a breach thought impossible, as only his most trusted and honorable advisors share this secret chamber.

The combination of Lange’s comedic and dramatic sensibilities with a historical narrative promises a unique perspective on the Civil War.

Fans of “The Love Boat” will be drawn to the nostalgic reunion of its stars, but the play’s serious themes suggest it’s more than a simple novelty act. The subject matter, which delves into the roles of women and spies during a tumultuous period in American history, is ripe for compelling drama.

“Lady Patriot” appears poised to be a thoughtful and engaging piece of theater, offering a fresh look at a well-trodden historical event through a lens of personal intrigue and espionage.
