(HOLLYWOOD PRESS CORPS) — New York City, New York — The Hollywood Press Corps recently sat down with the multi-talented Darwin Del Fabro, a non-binary Brazilian actor, singer, producer, and writer, to discuss their latest theatrical endeavor, “Lili/Darwin.” With a career that began at the tender age of 13 in Brazil, Darwin has made significant strides in the arts, including adapting the musical “It’s My Heart” into an album in 2015 and founding Madalina Productions.
As Darwin prepares for the opening of “Lili/Darwin” at The Tank in New York City this August, they are also navigating the recovery from seven transitional surgeries. Darwin’s dedication to their craft is evident, and they spoke candidly about their journey, reflecting on their childhood in Brazil as a shy artist who found solace in theater.
“I had to reintroduce myself to the world,” Darwin shared, emphasizing the impact of their experiences on their current work. The ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, both in Brazil and the U.S., weigh heavily on Darwin’s heart, fueling their desire to create art that bridges understanding between diverse lives.
Darwin describes “Lili/Darwin” as more than just a personal narrative; it’s a powerful exploration of identity and connection. When asked about the message they hope to convey to audiences, particularly those who may not be familiar with transgender experiences, Darwin expressed a desire for empathy and engagement. “I want people to have a contact and experience another human’s life,” they said, highlighting the importance of shared understanding in a world filled with barriers.
The inspiration for the play stems from the life of Lili Elbe, a Danish painter and one of the earliest recipients of gender-affirming surgery. Darwin is excited about intertwining their own narrative with Lili Elbe’s, emphasizing the shared passion for art and authenticity that both artists embody.

Reflecting on their initial motivation to tell this story through theater, Darwin revealed, “Being a foreigner and a Brazilian person, the spark was to tell the story on stage.” Their commitment to theater as a medium for acceptance and expression shines through their words.

Darwin is enthusiastic to collaborate with Megan Finn, the creative director at The Tank. “Megan is great for bringing new writers to do bold works,” they noted, recounting how she was the first person they contacted to direct the play after its completion. The partnership has proven fruitful, especially as they navigate the challenges of staging a production in the aftermath of the pandemic.
New York City holds a special place in Darwin’s heart, serving as a backdrop for self-discovery and growth. “I discovered myself in New York City,” they stated, expressing gratitude for the support and opportunity to reinvent themselves in a city known for its diversity. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else.”

The conversation delved into vulnerable topics, including Darwin’s reflections on masculinity and their personal experiences following transition. Their openness about navigating these complex feelings adds depth to the narrative of “Lili/Darwin,” promising an impactful theatrical experience.
As the anticipation builds for the premiere of “Lili/Darwin,” Darwin Del Fabro stands as a beacon of creativity and resilience. The play, which touches on themes of identity, connection, and the human experience, is set to be a significant addition to the New York theater scene this August.
