The Rulers Show by Scott VanderVoort at Art Cake Studios in Brooklyn

(HOLLYWOOD PRESS CORPS) — New York City — I visited the show RULERS from Scott VanderVoort before its closing at the Art Cake Studios in Brooklyn on January 11th, 2025.  Mr. VanderVoort is a New York-based painter and sculptor, also currently working in Bali and LA, who developed a self-alphabet and measurement rulers for visual communication.

Impermanence is a current theme of his work, that explores the transitory nature of life and the world.

His approach to minimalism,  emphasizes simplicity and reduction, creating a dialogue between positive and negative spaces, shadows and evocative illusions.

Conveyed through the use of different materials, fleeting light, or forms that seem to disappear, yet dealing with themes related to aesthetics and the ambiguous, his work is a metaphor for transience: structures constantly shift and change, reflecting the fleeting nature of existence.

In his words, his work is a result of “activating space, place and objects to bring life to what has seemingly been overlooked or disregarded.”
