The 16th Annual Southern California
Slack Key Festival

Sunday, January 15, 2023 at the
Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center

(HOLLYWOOD PRESS CORPS)  Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center — Friday, January 13th, 2023 — Kala Koa Entertainment celebrates 16 years of bringing the biggest and brightest names in Hawaiian music to the mainland with the 2023 Southern California Slack Key Festival returning to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, January 15, 2023.

One of the most acclaimed Hawaiian concerts to ever leave the islands, the Southern California Slack Key Festival takes fans on a Hawaiian musical journey showcasing GRAMMY-winning slack key guitarists, the best hula dancers in the world, special guest performers and a free to the public Island Marketplace.

Since 2008, the Southern California Slack Key Festival has been the biggest Hawaiian music concert event in the mainland U.S. and features the most respected names in Hawaiian guitar music and hula today. Taking its name from a finger-picking style of guitar playing indigenous to Hawaii (as heard on the Grammy-nominated soundtrack for “The Descendants”), the Slack Key Festival brings the art of ki ho’alu guitar to Redondo Beach.

George Kuo

This year’s Southern California Slack Key Festival’s line-up includes George Kuo, one of Hawaii’s premier Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar artists; Makaha Sons, one of Hawaii’s leading Hawaiian musical groups; Sonny Lim, a member of Hawaii’s famous musical Lim family; Jeff Peterson, contributed to two Grammy Award-winning recordings and a winner of eight Na Hōkū Hanohano Awards; Jim “Kimo” West, 2021 Grammy Award-winner and multiple Na Hōkū Hanohano Awards; Kainani Kahaunaele, won seven Na Hōkū Hanohano Awards in 2021; Kamuela Kimokeo, a member of the Na Hōkū Hanohano award winning group Hi’ikua; Ka’ihi Kimokeo, and Bryan Tolentino, popular ukulele player who can be heard on scores of recordings for other artists as well as his own Grammy nominated CD’s.

What is Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Music?
Played from the heart and soul through the fingers and flowing with vivid tropical images, Hawaiian ki ho’alu (slack key) is truly one of the great acoustic guitar traditions of the world. In slack key, some of the strings are “slacked” from the standard guitar tuning, with the thumb playing the bass notes while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.

How does the distinctive sound of slack key music fit into the fabric of Hawaiian music and culture? Watch this video and learn more about this beautiful generations-old art form – https://vimeo.com/155399448.

L.A. COMIC CON AFTER PARTY 2022

(HOLLYWOOD PRESS CORPS) — Los Angeles — Saturday, December 3rd, 2022 — Following the second day of LACC which took place at the L.A. Convention Center. Almost a mile down the road at the Mayan, an historic after party took place.

The after party titled Raiders of the Hidden Temple takes its name from the legendary Nickelodeon game show Legends of the Hidden Temple and the iconic first Indiana Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Mayan itself was already perfectly fit for this theme, but there was extra decor added in including an Indiana Jones idol replica. There were two featured acts with the first being the voice of everyone’s favorite character that “lives in a pineapple under the sea,” Spongebob Squarepants.

Tom Kenny & The Hi-Seas performs throughout L.A. and earlier in the day, Kenny was the second panelist on the main stage at the convention following the 20th anniversary reunion of Jimmy Neutron: Buy Genius.

Kenny and his band performs covers of Motown Classics and other great R&B/ Soul songs of the 60s. At one point Kenny was out singing in the audience. This performance wouldn’t be complete without “The Best Day Ever” and “Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas),” both coming from Spongebob Squarepants. Due to time constraints a few songs were cut from the performance. The Hi-Seas include are a 11-piece band with three backing vocalists, a guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboards, and horns.

The next performance came from supergroup The Action Figures made up of actors Scott Grimes (American Dad), Greg Grunberg (Star Wars), childhood actor Brad Savage, and Dynasty’s Jack Coleman, and artist Nick Marzock. Their guests included The Walking Dead’s Sarah Wayne Callies, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’s, and everybody’s favorite Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson (Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers). The Action Figures played a number of incredible covers like Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis,” Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker’s “American Girl,” Jim Croce’s “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” The Action figures have performed at not only various comic conventions but also American Idol, The Tonight Show, and Nascar.

ROCK AGAINST MS ROCKTOBER CHARITY CONCERT AT THE WHISKEY A GO GO 2022

(Hollywood, California) Wednesday, October 12th, 2022 ~ Saluting the 80s in a Whiskey A Go Go style, hilarious comedian Hal Sparks MC’d the Rock Against MS event on the Sunset Strip. It was good seeing everyone again as we came together to raise awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. The top celebrity of the night was Nancy Sayle who started Rock Against MS at the world famous Whiskey five years ago. From the very stage where Jim Morrison once performed with the Doors, Hal whipped up the mosh pit with Nerd Hallen. Think Revenge of the Nerds meets SIR shred masters with Hal doing amazing heavy metal vocals. Hal’s vocal chops have improved over the last few years.

Check out Rock Against MS here

Whiskey regular, John B, who was at the DOORS show at the Whiskey in 1968 was at the show to check out the bands and support Rock Against MS. We watched Idol X do their amazing Billy Idol tribute. Idol X is Robert Sarzo from Queensryche playing Steve Steven’s licks and Matt Eberhart singing spiky hair Billy Idol songs (snarl). I had Cradle of Love stuck in my head for three days.

Ellen Zuckerman from the Hollywood Press Corps was at the event in the front row taking photos. All of these photos are by Ellen.

One of the highlights of the evening was country pop singer Annie Bosko singing with Guns and Roses’ Steven Adler on drums. Sam “Bam” Koltun from Faster Pussycat (guitar) and LA Guns (local legend) bass player Johny Martin (who looks like he should be in the Ramones).

The Rock Against MS Foundation produces so many cool events in addition to the annual concert. They are currently creating the Rock House. This is a brick and mortar space that will provide support to people with MS.

There were so many bands and it was great to see everyone again. On the tribute band side with Hal’s Nerd Hallen and Idol X with Robert Sarzo, there were the Iron Maidens, a Tom Petty/Johnny Cash tribute band called Petty Cash, The legendary GayC/DC and a special mention to the Street Drum Corps.

Dramarama played a bit which was really cool. From Great White, Dan Mcnay and Robby Lochner played. Patrick Stone from Budderside sang. Really so many talented people. Such a great night. We wanted to publish every picture that we have. Rock Against MS is such an important event. Enjoy the photos from this years Rock Against MS 2022.
