Patrick Ney, the California Wine Guy,  a hilarious, friendly and fun Sommelier will be attending to enhance your tasting experience.   He infuses his wine education with stand up comedy, and enjoys diversifying his wine selection.

Patrick Ney
Patrick Ney

Patrick Ney will assist in showcasing their featured vineyard Old Oak Cellars, a beautiful and eco conscious vineyard located in Pasadena, California.  Old Oak Cellars started in 2003 as an attempt to diversify a family vineyard business, the eldest, Paul Overholt, decided it was time to form a winemaking company to specialize in making Bordeaux Style wines.  In 2007, Paul decided to further his knowledge of the winemaking craft by completing the UC Davis Oenology and Viticulture Certification program and that set the wheels in motion for the project that eventually became Old Oak Cellars. As the scope of the Project grew, Paul asked Dave Lustig, who has an encyclopaedic mind in respect to winemaking, to join him as Co-Winemaker so that the business building and winemaking responsibilities could be shared.

Old Oak Cellars was born in 2009. Old Oak wines begin with grapes from the Alexander Valley and a few other local valleys in Sonoma County, which is renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Old Oak Cellars then processes and ferments their grapes up there, using the highest quality equipment and technology to produce award winning wines. Once fermentation has taken place, the white wines are filtered and bottled in the valley, while the young red wines are then transported down to our winery in Pasadena, where the real magic happens.

At their winery in Pasadena, the young wine is then aged and blended to perfection, spending time in stainless steel tanks before heading into a mixture of French, European and American oak barrels. Our winemakers then spend time getting to know the flavor development of the wines, sometimes blending different varietals for flavor and intensity.

Craft cocktails will be on hand by the unique and delicious Marani Vodka.  The pristine Armenian Ararat Valley is home to Marani Vodka and the  Eraskh Distillery which explains its unique honey texture and organic production.  It is a region on the southern edge of the “vodka belt” which stretches from Scandinavia across Eastern Europe before dipping down through Russia and the former republics of the Soviet Union.Marani is made with only 100% late-harvest winter wheat and natural spring water found within the Ararat Valley. Master distillers carefully manage a triple distillation and twenty-five times filtration process until the vodka’s preferred clarity is revealed. It is the next step which distinguishes Marani: its proprietary aging method. While most vodkas go from distillation and filtration tanks straight to the bottle, Marani uses skim milk and honey during its confidential process to smoothen the vodka, imparting a remarkably rounded taste and aroma which has become the Marani signature.

They are very excited to welcome Glassy Baby as a partner at our event!  They will have their beautiful votives and stemless glasses available for sale and will donate a portion of the proceeds back to Claire’s Place  Foundation and Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital!  Be SURE to view their lovely products on line here:  Glassy Baby

Premiere of “Lovesick Fool–Love in the Age of Like”

The witty animated film “Lovesick Fool––Love in the Age of Like” will be screening at the popular Hollyshorts Film Festival at the TCL Chinese Theatre in the heart of Hollywood tonight at 7:30pm. The film stars a talented ensemble of comedic geniuses like Lisa Kudrow, Janeane Garofalo, and Fred Willard. Polcino, an Emmy-nominated director of “The Simpsons”, “King of the Hill”, and “Family Guy”, directed, wrote, and voiced the lead role. The film is Polcino’s Mezmo Productions’ first feature.

“Dating in LA sucks. And animation seemed the best way to capture the despair while maintaining a sense of humor about it,” says Polcino.

It’s an original adult animated vision, expanding on Polcino’s award-winning short film “Lovesick Fool”, about a single guy in LA in search of true love. The film is semi-autobiographical for the multi-talented Polcino–a true comedy in a unique style featuring a lush soundtrack by innovative music supervisor Robin Fujiwara (music coordinator for “Burn Notice”) and top-notch voice performances by its stars. Rounding out the ensemble cast is David Banks (“Deadly Wives”, “Tosh.0”), Paul Gregory (“True Blood”, “Happily Divorced”), Renee Rivera (“Near Myth”), David Polcino (“Family Guy”), Pepper Jay (“Bill Plympton Presents Magnum Farce,” “Midlife”), Mila Musiynko (“Waiting for Dracula”), Paul Batmanis, Bradley Smith, and Melissa Teper. HPC’s own Vida Ghaffari (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,”“The Mindy Project”), who is also a talented character actress, will be making her animated film debut as the “dream girl.” Ghaffari also voices the role of hipster girl.

This comedic film had its West Coast premiere at the Los Angeles Art-House Film Festival where it won 1st place in the feature film category in the festival. After that, it moved on to the popular Topanga Film Festival, where it headlined the Comedy Shorts program and also won 1st place. The film made it’s US debut at the Manhattan Film Festival Polcino and has also screened at the Hollywood Short Film Festival, the Hollywood Reel Film Festival, the Victoria Film Festival, the NYC Independent Film Festival, The Atlanta Underground Film Festival and the Burbank Film Festival. Polcino also hopes to pitch the film as a TV series.

Inspired by the violent decay of her hometown Chicago, Lyssen breaks the common artist mold with various combinations of poetry and rap while motivating the lost souls to notice the world around them and consciously depict how they fit into it. “My goal is to allow people to not only enjoy my art, but also find the art within themselves and display it,” explains Lyssen. The delivery and wordplay of her lyrics keeps listeners engaged and stimulated, while the music entertains as a theatrical rendition of soul.

THE SHILLS DROP BRAND NEW VIDEO FOR “OH, THIS DEVILISH PLACE”

(New York, NY) Boston-based rock quartet, The Shills, announce the release of the video for their new single, “Oh, This Devilish Place,” which comes from their brand new LP, Keep Your Hands Busy: Volume 2, that dropped in May 2015. The four-piece band fuses modern rock and pop to create a sound that The Deli NYC describes as “simultaneously catchy, challenging and experimental in sound and concept.” The video highlights the second release from their album, which Baeble Music says melds psychedelic, swirling melodies with propulsive riffs and deeply layered guitar work. It’s rare for guitars on a record to sound simultaneously this spacey while also carrying so much forward rock momentum. The vocals snake through your mind — Bryan Murphy switching up between a Travis Morrison yelp and Thom Yorke falsetto.”

The Shills
The Shills

The Shills originated in Boston in 2004, and consist of Bryan Murphy (guitar/vocals), Ryan Jackson (guitar), Dave Sicilian (bass) and James Zaner (drums). After releasing an EP (Push), an LP (The Shills) and a concept record (Ganymede), the band began creating a two-part record, Keep Your Hands Busy: Volume 1 and 2. The first part was released in 2012 and was produced by Scott Riebling (Fall Out Boy, Cobra Starship, We The Kings). In early 2015, they released a cover of Ginuwine’s “Pony,” which caught the attention of Huffington Post, who raved, “The Shills have given the R&B singer’s hit a new spin, keeping plenty of the sexy that made the song so great.” With a tone that ranges from mellow to heavy and soft to aggressive, the band is currently preparing for the release of Keep Your Hands Busy: Volume 2.

The Shills
The Shills

Boston Globe praises the band’s 2012 single, “Move A Mountain,” saying, “[it] chugs like the riff from Heart’s ‘Barracuda’ under another soaring vocal that cements Murphy’s chillingly spot-on voice as one of the most dependable rock weapons in Boston right now.” Keep an eye out for upcoming releases from Keep Your Hands Busy: Volume 2, as well as the band’s Boston album release show on May 21st at Brighton Music Hall.

My AWESOME European Vacation

By Monica G

I recently had the opportunity to visit Europe for two weeks this summer. I had a blast! My vacation started in Dublin, Ireland. The flight from Los Angeles to Charlotte, North Carolina was four and a half (4 ½) hours, then off to Dublin which was eight and a half (8 ½) hours.

Albany House, it wasn’t a pleasant experience. As an American, when the hotel list double beds, you automatically think twin beds right? Well this is not the case in all the countries in Europe I visited (Ireland, France, Italy and Spain). Well at the Albany House, there was mold, which I am highly allergic and the paint was peeling off the walls. The shower was not built for a tall person, so my friends and I moved to O’Callaghan’s Hotel.

This hotel was nice and had “twin beds”. The receptionist felt so bad for us (my friends and I) she threw in free breakfast. The breakfast was delightful, we could order anything off the menu and as much as we wanted.Note to everyone-the croissants, bacon and waffles are the best! During my trip, I had the opportunity to take a tour of Jameson Distillery and taste different types of Irish whiskey. I’m not a whiskey drinker, but wow, it was potent. The other tour that I would recommend is the Country side (Glenlock tour). The tour of the country side was so green, it was beautiful, plus the sky was gray, therefore, my pictures were magnificent. Before we left Ireland, we did some Pub hops, which was fun, but watch out-the drivers in Ireland, will run you over with their car (and despite with the Irish say-we Americans do not drive on the wrong side of the road). Overall, the Irish are very friendly and I recommend everyone to visit Dublin, Ireland you will not be disappointed!

After Ireland, my friends and I went to Paris, France. In my opinion, Paris wasn’t as fun as Ireland. Yes, I saw the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Arc, but it seems like Americans are not on the French favorite list. However the hotel, Oceania Paris de Versailles and the staff were awesome (after a bump in the road). There were no twin rooms, so the hotel manager offered my friends and I an upgrade (we all had our own rooms). Well, I winked at the manager and received a robe and slippers, so I was happy. Although the hotel is far from the tourist sites, I recommend this hotel, as it is modern and chic. The breakfast however was continental and a big difference from Ireland’s. I didn’t care for French food, as there food is more rich (creamy in texture), but the desert was delish! Would I recommend Paris? Well if you want to see the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre (Mona Lisa) yes, other than that, skip it and spend more time in Italy.
Next, I was on my way to Florence, Italy, which has very old vintage hotels. We stayed at the Atlantic Palace Hotel. The staff was nice, rooms were decent, but the shower was not built for a tall person. The bellman Ramon was overly nice, eager to assist you at any time. The continental breakfast was okay, but having been spoiled from Ireland’s breakfast, it wasn’t anything special. Florence did have a city market place which had everything, wine, souvenirs, food, fresh meat, sauces, olive oil and even a cooking class. In Italy, we took a two (2) hour train ride to Rome and toured the Vatican, the Colosseum and the Spanish steps (no I did not climb the Spanish steps-this girl was tired). The Pope wasn’t home, but the Vatican has some awesome artwork and is a must see in Rome. The food was awesome. We went to this tavern named Open Baladin Roma, although the kitchen was closed, my friend had a beer and we both shared homemade chips. The chips
were made from real potatoes and were awesome. While sitting and waiting for our friend, the kitchen opened…and OMG, they made the best burger EVER! I can’t explain it, just know if you are ever in Rome, go and eat at this place, you will not be disappointed. The next day, my friends and I took another two and a half (2 ½) train ride to Venice, Italy. I’m in love! Everyone, I mean everyone should go to Venice, San Marco’s Square! It is beautiful. Take a boat tour of the city and go to the Glass Blowing Tour. It is magnificent. All of the restaurants that I attended were good, but then again I love Italian food.
Lastly, I was on to Madrid, Spain. Shockingly, I enjoyed Madrid almost as much as Italy. The hotel Inside Madrid Genova- is modern, chic and just plain awesome. The staff was great, even those who didn’t speak fluent English (it is a Latin country-so we need to learn their language). The tapas bar, El Tigre was delicious. This bar was family owned and the food was GREAT! I had steak, very well- seasoned. Don’t forget to take a tour of the Palace, and while you are there-go to the Flamenco show and a ballet. You won’t be disappointed.
I hope you enjoyed my short version of my European trip…until next time loves…

From her heartbreakingly hilarious Starlet O’Hara to the adorably inept Eunice and alarmingly funny Miss Hannigan, Carol has delighted and inspired millions of viewers and thousands of comedic actors. She took risks as a performer and through her courage, encouraged fellow actors to try new things and always, always reach for the sky. Her innate love of actors led to the creation of an ensemble cast that made The Carol Burnett Show a masterpiece of variety programming.”

The Hollywood Press Corps recently got a chance to interview Brooklyn-based Future Wave band, The Fantastic Plastics. They just dropped a new single and they’re calling it , “We are Obsolete.” The track is just one cut from their forthcoming full-length album, Devolver.

Here’s the interview;

1. What is the concept of The Fantastic Plastics?
We are from the present time that the people of the 1950s / 1960s envisioned when they dreamed of the 21st century. People 50 years ago had such optimism for the future. They thought the future would be a panacea as opposed to the dystopia it has become. We are from that optimistic future, that alternate dimension, transported here and now that we are here we will make it all better.

2. What are your influences?
We are equally influenced by music, books and movies. Most of our influences do not exist in this dimension. However, since arriving, we have found inspiration in Gary Numan, DEVO, Kraftwerk, B-52s, and The Ventures to name a few bands. From the literary world, we are mostly inspired by William Gibson’s Nuromancer trilogy and George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty Four. When it comes to film we take fashion inspiration from Barbarella, 2001 A Space Odyssey, THX-1138 and many more from the genre.

3. Have you ever been to Japan/do you know any words in Japanese?
We have not been to Japan, but it is our goal to get there soon. They seem to be the closest society to that optimistic future we spoke of; especially in fashion and design. Of course we know the phrase: domo arigato Mr Roboto.

4. If you could be any instrument what would it be?
The “Holophoner” from Futurama.

5. What is something that would surprise people to know about you?
Trans-dimensional travel has caused us to constantly crave something you people call a “Cheez-It.”

6. What are your thoughts on New York City fashion?
We love that NYC fashion is such a mix and that you can express your creativity and personality through fashion without judgment. However, on the other hand, this is also a very corporate city, with a larger number of people who feel the need to conform in that world. This is why people from other cities equate New Yorkers with always wearing black. We are just hoping to influence more people to wear silver futuristic space suits on a daily basis.

7. What does “gentrification” mean to you?
Supposedly it means progress but we find that hard to believe. They destroy and tear down old buildings that have stood in some cases over 100 years and replace them with cheaply made glass boxes. We’d like to see self-sustaining architecture. Buildings covered in solar panels with garden rooftops meant to last hundreds of years and off the grid completely. That would be progress.

8. Can you tell us about an interesting experience on the New York City subway?
We could tell you many, but most are x rated and or involve things that would turn your stomach. We once did a photo shoot on the subway for our “Outsiders” EP that involved us wearing some huge furry neon insect masks and silver space outfits. We were amazed that nearly no one batted an eye or gave us a second glance. That right there says a lot about New Yorkers and NYC Fashion.

9. What was the last book that you read?
UBIK by Philip K. Dick. It is a trip to read. We read somewhere that Michel Gondry was trying to adapt it into a movie. Fingers crossed.

10. Do you have any words of wisdom for your fans?
Keep Moving Forward
This was such a fortunate experience to interview the Fantastic Plastics! Stayed tuned to the Hollwood Press Corps for future announcements regarding the upcoming album, Devolver.
