The Hollywood Press Corps recently had the opportunity to interview Dilenschneider about his book, which is published by Citadel Press Books. The conversation revealed a deep concern over the erosion of character in contemporary society. “What’s missing today is a commitment to character,” Dilenschneider remarked. “The leaders I profile in this book showed us that courage and integrity are not just traits to admire; they are essential for effective leadership.”

Hollywood Press Corps(HPC): Tell us about your new book!

Bob Dilenschneider: It was really that the timing was right. I came up with a list of 250 people that had a lot of the same qualities. I wrote about those qualities. One of the things that these people all have in common is that they do the right thing no matter what. Even if it’s a losing proposition. They do what is right. Some of these people were great politicians. Collin Powell was right on target. These people are consistent.

(HPC): What did you learn when you wrote the book?

Bob Dilenschneider: People don’t always do what they say they are going to do. He went on to say that he went to Notre Dame for college and that’s where he learned to always do the right thing. With regards to Hollywood he mentioned Clint Eastwood, Paul, Newman, and Lucille Ball as people who he feels always did the right thing.

Through portraits of figures such as Nelson Mandela, Florence Nightingale, and Walt Disney, Dilenschneider illustrates how character-driven leadership can transcend challenges and inspire change. “These individuals faced immense adversities, yet their unwavering commitment to their principles allowed them to make significant contributions to society,” he explained.

One of the book’s key strengths lies in its diverse range of subjects, which include political leaders like Colin Powell, cultural icons such as Julia Child, and champions of social justice like Susan B. Anthony. “Each of these individuals exemplified a strong moral compass, and their stories resonate with the idea that true leadership comes from within,” Dilenschneider noted.

Bob also emphasized the lessons that can be drawn from these historical figures for today’s leaders. “It’s about understanding the importance of loyalty, vision, and the courage to stand up for what is right, even when faced with overwhelming opposition,” he said.

The upcoming event at The Sheen Center on April 15, where Dilenschneider will engage in conversation with John P. Cahill, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of New York, promises to further explore these themes. With a keen focus on communication as a fundamental aspect of leadership, Dilenschneider anticipates a rich dialogue. “Effective communication is crucial for leaders. It’s how they inspire others and foster an environment of trust and respect,” he remarked.

As the interview concluded, Dilenschneider shared his hopes for the book: “I want readers to walk away with a renewed sense of purpose and an understanding that character is not just a personal asset—it’s a societal necessity.” He encourages young leaders and innovators to reflect on the lessons from the past and apply them to their own lives and careers.

“Character: Life Lessons in Courage, Integrity, and Leadership” serves as both a tribute to influential figures and a guide for future leaders, reminding us that the strength of character is what ultimately shapes our world.
