Brain Mapping Foundation Conference and Gala

The Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (“SBMT”), Brain Mapping Foundation (“BMF”), and the National Center for NanoBioElectonics (“NCNBE”) held their 14th Annual World Brain Mapping and Therapeutics Conference at the swanky Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. SBMT was founded in 2004 to break boundaries in healthcare and to promote global interdisciplinary research to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with central nervous system diseases and disorders. I was unable to attend, but was so impressed with the mission of this foundation that I was compelled to write a post and here it is.

“This year, there are 320 speakers and 12 keynote speakers who addressed state-of-the-art brain science and technology, and pioneering diagnostics therapeutics for Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, brain and spinal trauma, brain cancer, psychiatric disorders, the Autism spectrum, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (“PTSD”), as well as all other neurological disorders,” said Dr. Wes Ashford, Clinical Professor of Stanford University (affiliated), Director of The War Related Illness & Injury Study Center at the VA Palo Alto HCS and the 14th President of SBMT (2016-17). “This year, several sessions of the conference will focus on translation, integration and development of advanced diagnostics and therapeutics for soldiers, veterans and civilians with neurological disorders.”

Annually, the Society and the Brain Mapping Foundation recognizes pioneers in the field of brain mapping and therapeutics with distinguished awards. The Brain Mapping Foundation is holding its “Gathering for the Cure” black tie gala on Thursday, April 20th at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel to celebrate pioneering work of some of the world’s leading scientists, technologists, policymakers, and science advocates.

Artists For Trauma Adaptive Artists Multi-Media Art Show

Artists for Trauma (AFT) held their Adaptive Artist Multi-Media Art show at the noted ENGEL & VOLKERS SOUTH BAY. This AFT fundraiser and public awareness event was a great introduction to this worthwhile charity and their mission to empower adaptive artists recovering from life altering trauma and who utilize healing through artistic platforms to expedite quality recovery and reinvention of their lives.

The Artists For Trauma Adaptive Artist Multi-Media Art Show featured artwork by talented inspiring artists, utilizing various artistic disciplines following their life altering traumas that resulted in a total life change due to paralysis, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and PTSD. This opening exhibition featured artwork by members such as Melissa Allensworth, Andrew Angulo, my “Live with Ford and Vida co-host Ford Austin, Richard Bell, Michael Hansel and Brandon Newcomer. 100% of All Art Sales proceeds benefit Artists for Trauma and the 5+ adaptive artists. AFT was founded by Laura T. Sharpe, who is a trauma survivor herself and selflessly wants to help other trauma survivors to be empowered, inspired and healed.

“We feel very blessed to have been embraced by Artists For Trauma and Laura Sharpe. We hope that with the support of AFT, we can shine a bright light of hope on the spirits of all trauma survivors and those overcoming PTSD,” said Ford Austin.

Ford’s loving wife, Lauree Dash, who was there for every step of his inspiring recovery, echoed his sentiments. “I’m so grateful to Laura and AFT. Laura was an inspiration and huge support in Ford’s recovery. She was an angel who paved the way for us showing us recovery was possible. She was a tangible example of the resiliency and the ability we all possess to heal. It is so vital to have a role model who shows you recovery is possible. The singing lessons AFT so generously provided Ford helped him regain his voice and helped his brain heal from his TBI. Engagement with arts provided a way for Ford to heal organically, and quickly,” she added.

It has been a privilege and honor to work with Ford Austin and his loving, supportive wife Lauree, from the early months of Ford’s near death, life altering traumatic car crash 5 years ago to his now inspiring and thriving quality of life recovery ; rich with empowerment and forward progress in his various artistic endeavors as a once again working actor, Lifetime member of the Actor’s Studio , Director, producer , writer and Artists for Trauma Ambassador. Artist for Trauma recognizes and respects the sacred trust of the individuals and families who partner with us in our integrative, healing through art programs during a most vulnerable period of their lives,” added Laura Sharpe.

Fashion Power Couple Faith Boutin and Murray Rosen

At the second Sue Wong fashion show I attended, I had the good fortune of meeting the lovely Faith Boutin and her husband Murray Rosen.  I recently had the honor of being on the cover of their esteemed publication FVM Global Magazine. They are very creative and inspiring individuals who truly follow their passions for fashion, the arts and education.

How they came across the pursuit of their goals was even artistically inspired. In 1990, Faith and Murray attended the monumental Van Gogh Retrospective in Amsterdam to celebrate the centennial of the artist’s death. The couple was so moved both by the works they saw and the life of Van Gogh that they decided to dedicate their lives to the service of art. An earlier visit to the same field of sunflowers Van Gogh had viewed and then painted and then chosen to end his life in was also a deeply moving and life-changing experience for this artistically inclined couple. Faith and Murray have studied art history extensively in Paris, Florence, Milan, Venice, Rome and Barcelona. In the course of these studies in art, fashion, architecture and photography, they have made many international contacts in these fields.

Fast forward to the summer of 2015, when the couple was in Paris to cover their first ever Haute Couture Fashion Week for their own magazine dedicated to the arts, FVM Global. In the interim, they had represented artists; used art to benefit charities; promoted talented emerging artists, actors, and fashion designers; and launched in 2008 their magazine, which has since celebrated all the arts and the human creative experience, and recognized individuals who have achieved greatness in their fields. An interest in fashion, which the magazine has since pursued diligently, was nurtured while representing clients in the industry; these clients proved instrumental in the couple’s exposure and education in the field.

Faith is the managing editor and force behind the magazine, working all hours every day covering art around the globe. She is the heart and spirit of FVM Global. Her passions are art and fashion and she has written or co-written nearly every monthly cover story in the magazine’s history. She loves her work, whether it be covering a Sue Wong fashion show in Los Angeles, a Roy Lichtenstein retrospective at the Pompidou Center in Paris, or a Jean Paul Gautier exhibit in Stockholm. Faith is a former public relations and advertising consultant.

Murray is the editor-in-chief of FVM Global Magazine and co-writes many of the art, fashion, music, and restaurant reviews. Besides the magazine, he also runs a tutoring service for students, and exhorts them to contribute their own works to the magazine, including essays, reviews, art, and photography. He encourages his students to read the magazine’s articles to broaden their knowledge base and expand their vocabulary. He feels having his own magazine gives him carte blanche and he tries to write about subjects of interest and importance. Murray used to  teach math, physics and chemistry.  He still maintains a tutoring business in those subjects, which is thriving.

FVM has supported charities such as Face Forward (which provides facial reconstruction for severely battered women) and Adopt-a-Letter (which provides Christmas gifts for needy children) with numerous articles.

FVM has also championed under-represented minorities in the arts with many profiles of fashion designers, actors, etc. who are Asian, Latino, and African-American.

So, whether attending a press preview for architect Frank Gehry’s retrospective at LACMA, viewing a Giotto/Caravaggio exhibit in Paris, interviewing fashion designer Bowie Wong after his Haute Couture Week show, lunching with fashion designer Dalia MacPhee at the Galerie Lafayette, or hearing Gustavo Dudamel conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Faith and Murray are always at work in support of the human creative experience.
