Heather Verran is a top fashion designer currently living in New York City. Her designs for Shape magazine are slick, inspired and full of energy. Heather has created innovative products for Gap, American Eagle, Nordstrom and New Balance, just to name a few. The Hollywood Press Corps had an exclusive opportunity to interview Heather and ask her a few questions about fashion design.
Why did you decide to become a fashion designer?
I decided to become a fashion designer to see if I could merge the world of art, movement and design with clothing. To make clothes was always second nature.
I learned couture sewing techniques from my mom and my grandmother. We made nearly all of our own clothes, and the scraps were used to make outfits for the dolls that my grandfather carved for me. He would also build the garment racks for my “runway” shows.
What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer?
It always means a lot to see my vision out there in the world when someone casually walks by me wearing a look that I designed. In addition, there are other favorite moments such as: seeing the creative process unfold into a collection, the energy and buzz of the sample room, and I love to draw.
What did you think when you were asked to design a collection for the Shape magazine brand?
I thought, wow, this is an integrated strategic partnership that connects two leaders in their specialized categories to create a unique and energetic opportunity for women.
Shape magazine is such a powerful brand, with 11 million readers and they engage millions more to look, feel, and be amazing.
Apparel Bridge, the licensee has been making active apparel globally for the past 35 years and is a family-owned, world leader in one-stop manufacturing with a unique vertical model. They have been manufacturing apparel for the world’s largest retailers for 35 years, producing more than 400 million garments. They control all production steps to avoid the middleman, with no extra layers in the process. They employ a top team of scientists think about performance of a fabric before it is even created which gives me the ability to create fabrics that no one has ever seen before. Apparel Bridge is eco-friendly and fair-trade practices add value to clients worldwide which is very important to be.
It sounded like the perfect opportunity for me as I completely align with Shape magazine’s mission to exercise your right to be beautiful. The clothing gives them an opportunity to feel beautiful while doing so. The partnership gives me the ability to work towards the future of performance clothing at a price that is inclusive to most women.
What were your inspirations for the designs you created for the shoot?
The Fall collection that I am shooting today was inspired by a hike that I took last summer. The heat had peaked and along the path were these beautiful granite cliffs. I used a photo of one to create a print for the first collection. The palette was chosen from photo, the deep blue lines, the rust and the shots of silver. I chose fabrics that had a similar texture and feel.
Later that day, as the sun was setting, the fireflies came out. This inspired the second collection. I designed a print that was from a photo of them bouncing in the woods and added thermochromic technology to the fabric. Thermochromic is when the print disappears when exposed to heat and sunlight, just like how you never see fireflies in daylight.
The third collection, I was watching women train for a marathon back home in NYC. The cool greys and textures of the city I found to be stunning, albeit in a hi tech and cool way.
How did you select the materials you used?
I selected the materials by what emulated the texture, surfaces and color of my inspiration- rocks, fireflies, the streets. The other main consideration is the handfeel of all materials, making sure everything is soft and comfortable.
Were the materials difficult to work with?
No. I carefully select and create the materials that I know have the correct properties to function, fit and wear well. I have been trained by the best chemists and fabric experts from all over the world. At Shape (Apparel Bridge) I have an amazing group of scientists and fabric experts always excited to develop what ever I dream up.
What was it like working with Shape magazine ?
They are an amazing group to work with. We are a great collaborative team all in alignment to bring forth the Shape active wear brand to a sophisticated, functional, fashion forward brand at an attainable price point.
What do you think of yoga pants? Gym wear?
I love seeing the evolution from how basic and plain yoga pants used to be all black and one or two silouhettes to how stylish and fun they are today. Performance fabrics, techniques, seaming, and prints have changed the game. The moment for gym wear as a part of everyday is now. I don’t see that changing. They flatter any woman and are so comfortable.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continue doing what I am doing, the opportunities are endless here as we have just started.
Fashion is an individual’s self expression. When someone creates a uniques look that everyone loves and wants to emulate, it becomes fashion. There is a collective consciousness about what appeals to us at any given time.
Fashion comes from all walks of life.
How do you stay up to date regarding fashion?
I live in NYC, and it is all around me. With active wear, it is less about the runway that it is about beauty, well being and performance. I look at music, emerging artists, nature and fashion.
How do you prepare for a photo shoot?
I take the original inspiration from the collection, and build a narrative around it. It is usually focused around one activity, such as rock climbing, running, tennis, skiing, etc.
I cast the model that is on brand for the magazine, who is upbeat and happy, fit, not skinny, athletic and naturally beautiful.
I select the appropriate photographer, one who best fits the overarching theme and trend. I review with them the location and give the art direction so they can prepare the set or the lighting.
After the crew has been selected I create a shot list with the outfit, shoes, hair and makeup for each look.
Hunter: Future Cop, the edgy urban action thriller directed and produced by award-winning filmmaker Gregory Hatanaka will be released at Walmart stores nationally on December 1st and it is also available on demand at Amazon, Google, iTunes and Cable. Noted actor Becks is the writer-producer and star of Hunter where he plays the title role of Lt. Ramsey Hunter. Hunter’s life changes drastically when several jarring cases hit him simultaneously. In no time, our fearless hero has to contend with a rogue cop killer, a beautiful Southern runaway serial killer and his corrupt police captain boss blackmailing him. But only one of the cases leads him to an ending of universal truth. Mystical Cop. Deadly Force. Champion of People. Beck’s Hunter is all that and more in this moving thriller that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Hunter has a quick draw and a heart of gold in this epic film.
Becks stars opposite budding executive producer and co-star Salih Mayi, Laurene Landon (Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance), DeBell (The Big Brawl), George Lazenby (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), Marcella (Blue Dream), and Nicole D’Angelo (Darling Nikki).
“Making Hunter was such a treat as I worked with a talented veteran cast such as Ron Becks, GeorgeLazenby, Kristine DeBell and Laurene Landon who really helped to bring this retro 70s cop thriller to the silver screen,” said Hatanaka.
“It’s always an honor to work with Gregory (Hatanaka). I’m very grateful to him for giving me my first villainous role,” said DeBell.
Landon echoed DeBell’s sentiments. “Gregory is indubitably the most innovative director I have ever been granted the serendipity to work for. He pushes the boundaries of the status quo,” she said. He gives his actors the creative license to bring the characters to life. I love playing deeply flawed characters and Gregory challenges you to make them not three – but four dimensional, with respect and compassion. I am in awe of this man. What an honor to play my first villainous role opposite George Lazenby, a consummate pro. And Ron Becks is superb as Hunter,” added Landon.
“Hunter is not your typical cop and robbers movie, because it’s more about our inner journeys in that at some point in our lives we are ruled by self doubt and self made demons, so it’s all about finding the hero in you,” said a philosophical Becks.

Baba Joon is a very touching story and it’s a very multi-cultural story about an Iranian immigrant family in Israel. Yitzhak (Navid Negahban) runs the turkey farm his father built with his own two hands after they emigrated from Iran to Israel. When his son Moti (Asher Avrahami) turns thirteen, Yitzhak teaches him the trade, hoping that he will continue the proud family tradition. But Moti doesn’t like working in the turkey barn; his passion is fixing up junkyard cars and bringing them back to life.
Moti’s mother Sarah (Viss Elliot Safavi) tries to reconcile between the two, while his grandfather pushes Yitzhak to take a firm hand with his son.
Yitzhak takes Moti’s refusal to work in the turkey barn as a personal rejection. Though he loves his son dearly, he makes it his mission to impose the family farm on Moti.
The arrival of Darius (Fariborz David Diaan) , the uncle from America, sets off a chain of events that will undermine the familial harmony. Soon enough Yitzhak will learn that his son is just as stubborn as he is. The conflict is inevitable. Baba means father in Farsi and is a term of endearment and respect in Persian culture. So indeed it’s an appropriate title.

Landmark Restaurant Delphi Greek wowed friends, customers, government officials and celebrities with a huge bash. The party featured an awards ceremony, authentic Greek music, and the traditional gourmet Greek cuisine that has made the restaurant famous. The restaurant was honored by federal, state and local officials.
On October 18, 2015, Delphi Greek Restaurant celebrated 30 years in the same location. The restaurant was honored with an impressive nine commendations from government officials. The ceremony was MC’d by Chairman of the Westwood Community Council Steve Sann and awards were presented to owner and operator Roozbeh Farahanipour by representatives of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office, Congressman Ted Lieu’s office, California State Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones’ office, County Accessor Jeffery Prang’s office, City Councilman Paul Koretz’soffice and state Senator Ben Allen’s office. Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas upon presenting Farahanipour his special accommodation from the State Assembly, proclaimed he and his family would like to be experiencing Delphi’s fine cuisine, “for another thirty years, at least!”
Also in attendance were West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Board members Steve Little and Elham Yaghoubian, who is also a noted author, human rights activist and handbag designer.
State Senator Joel Anderson presented Farahanipour with not one but two separate awards; one for “unyielding commitment to providing quality food, outstanding service, and job opportunities to our community;” and one to Roozbeh himself for his community leadership, “Special recognition of your commitment to bettering our community as president of West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and program chair of the Westwood Rotary Club, your unyielding dedication to advocating for the freedom of the Iranian people, and your devotion to empowering others towards civic engagement through leading by example.” For his part, the restaurant’s owner was overcome by the moment. With a huge grin, and tears in his eyes, Farahanipour said, “I never expected this kind of outpouring of support. When I immigrated to the US, I wanted to be sure that I could add value and be of service to the community at large.”
This in spite of the fact that the restaurant had already been honored several times by government agencies, no fewer than 17 times by the prestigious Zagat survey, and Farahanipour’s wife, noted pastry chef Rana Pourarab has won multiple awards for her amazing cheesecakes and traditional Greek desserts including a Certificate of Recognition from the City of Los Angeles for her work as a Signature Pastry Chef.
Celebrities in attendance to help commemorate the evening included filmmaker Armin Nasseri (Seeking Valentina), Actor Scott Engrotti (Scorpion), actresses Vida Ghaffari (the Mindy Project), Jessica Landon (Drake and Josh), Kristin West (Seeking Valentina), Mo Kelly (Hijos), Elise Muller (Baghead), Vikki Lizzi (The Bay) andPatricia Kara (Deal or No Deal), who was especially proud to be there sharing her Greek heritage, along with board members of several local Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Club, BNI, Friends of the Westwood Library, the Westwood Community Council, Local Homeowners Association and the Westwood Neighborhood Council.
The anniversary event also featured a blue carpet and ribbon cutting ceremony. The “Hellenic Blue” ribbon was sheared by Farahanipour, and Pourarab, along with the former Mayor of Beverly Hills, the Honorable Jimmy Delshad, Assemblyman Ridley-Thomas, State Senator Anderson, Captain Tina Nieto, Commanding Officer for the West Los Angeles LAPD, Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles, the Honorable Daniel Tamm and Greek Consul General Gregory Karahalios who said “he knew the secret to the restaurant’s longevity.” “Even though we are in a city that always expands and changes, we need something that is stable,” Karahalios said. “This restaurant has maintained the color of Greece.” The Council General said Delphi Greek is one of the few places in Southern California to reflect the Hellenic tradition and culture.
Patrons Charles Winkler and Ann Tinz said they found the restaurant by accident 30 years ago and have been coming back ever since. The Winkler-Tinz’s were among the very first patrons of the restaurant when it opened, and said it was the food, ambiance and service that kept them coming back year after year. Tinz said she feels like it’s a little trip to Greece every time the couple visits the restaurant.
Of course, the real star of the party was the outstanding food. Guests were treated to authentic Greek menu items: Greek Caviar, Lamb Chops, Chicken Souvlaki, Broiled Shrimp, Dolma (Stuffed Grape Leaves), Spanakopita (Greek spinach pie), Tiropitakia (3 cheese Greek Pie), and a wide assortment of Greek beers and wines.
Celebrity Chef (Nia Luna) and food blogger Nicole Guzman’s take on the evening: “The food was delicious across the board. From the lamb chops to the shrimp…from the dolmas to the chicken. I can see why this place has withstood the test of time! How rare it is in this day and age that a place like this can endure. You know they must be doing something right! I highly recommend this place if you’re ever in the area.”

Once the formalities of the award ceremony were completed, the A-list television stars celebrated their nominations and wins at the first party of the night: The Emmy’s Governors Ball.
The theme for the night, and quite fittingly so was, ‘Reigning With Radiance’. And spotted in all her glamorous radiance was actress and recording artist, Ha Phuong wearing an elegant Quynh Paris floor length gown in fuchsia. Equally as stunning was actress Jennifer Day wearing a contrasting white couture gown. The two A-listers looked as beautiful as they did radiant.
No stranger to being photographed with her contemporaries, Ha Phuong continued to dazzle throughout the night, stopping to pose with actress and TV host Tia Barr, and Grammy nominated and winner of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Regina King. Ha Phuong’s jewelled clutch purse as the perfect accessory looked every bit as impressive as Regina’s trophy. Ha Phuong may not have won an award but with her flawless skin and beautiful pose, she looked every inch a star at the Emmy’s Governors Ball.
Talented filmmaker and actor Gregory Blair is not a man to rest: with his award-winning psychological thriller DEADLY REVISIONS due out this fall via SGL Entertainment, Blair is already at work on his next project. Horror takes a back seat to comedy this time in a tale about a friendly gathering that goes hilariously awry when an unexpected guest arrives. With a pickaxe. And an attitude. Raise your glass to GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE.
“I love films that successfully walk that line between horror and comedy,” writer/director Blair says, “whether it’s witty and referential like Scream or giddy low camp like Army of Darkness.” Aiming for that exact mix of madness, GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE is a fast-paced, wacky romp in the vein of Shaun of the Dead and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. “I wanted to do something totally different from DEADLY REVISIONS”, Blair said. “That film is a brooding, moody, slow-burn mystery and I wanted to do something kinetic, wild and crazy.” Thus, GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE was hatched.
But comedy isn’t reserved for the film alone: Blair has made it the cornerstone of all the movie’s marketing; even the official site and fundraising is aimed at invoking laughter. “The film is all fun and games and we wanted to let the fun go beyond the confines of the film,” Blair says. “Hence the parody element in our teaser.” The campaign video is a “meta” comedy, slyly spoofing campaigns in general, even as it pitches its own. Contributions allow fans to “Join the party” and get movie memorabilia, film credit and other perks. The campaign and video can be viewed at http://www.GardenPartyMassacreFilm.com.
If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a fun, new Playbuzz quiz game in anticipation of the film. “Which GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE Character Are You?” lets fans choose between personality traits, weapons and more to discover which character from the film they best match. “Folks can have fun and get to know a little more about the characters along the way,” Blair explains. The quiz asks questions such as: “Do you Keep Calm or Scream Bloody Murder?”, “What Do You Bring to a Party?” and more. Those who are—excuse the term—game, can take the quiz here: http://bit.ly/1HVE7EG
And who is bringing this crazy cast of GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE characters to life? The list of actors includes some familiar names in comedy and horror as well as some fresh faces: Andy Gates (“Grimm”, “The Young and the Restless”,etc.), Nichole Bagby (“My Crazy Roommate”, “Sex Sent Me to the ER”, etc.), HPC’s Vida Ghaffari (“Jimmy Kimmel Live”, “The Mindy Project”, etc.), Dawna Lee Heising (“Slink”, “Legend of the Red Reaper”, etc.), David Leeper, Matt Weinglass and even Blair himself. “I figure if I’m gonna torture all these actors, I better get my butt in there, too,” he says.
GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE, shoots this October through PIX/SEE Productions; just days after DEADLY REVISIONS is released on 9/29/15. DEADLY REVISIONS won the Flicker award for “Best Picture”, the L.A. Movie Award for “Best Narrative Feature” as well as the Claw Award for “Best Feature Film Screenplay”, so Blair has shown he knows how to craft a good tale. In that light, GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE appears set to be a hilarious, hit and a bloody good time.
