My trip to Jamaica 2015

Vacationing in Ocho Rios Jamaicaimage

I had another opportunity to go on vacation which was to Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The vacation started off bad, as my American Airlines red eye flight was delayed by an hour and I was stuck at LAX. When I finally reached Miami, I had to run to my connecting flight to catch the plane to Jamaica. I literally had fifteen minutes, but I made it. When I reached Jamaica, of course my luggage wasn’t there, but the customer service representative (at Montego Bay Airport) was very helpful and stated that my luggage will arrive at my hotel that evening. The drive from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios seemed like it took a century, but it was only two and a half hours. The scenery from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios was shocking. One corner, there were these amazing mansions, the next corner there were these small one bedroom un-keep houses and they all surrounded the beach. During my long ride (on a two lane highway) to the resort, I saw goats and chickens in the road; I was wondering is this the country? Nevertheless, I reached my resort, Jewel Duns River and the bellman was like where’s your luggage? Good question (I said sarcastically; hey I just go off of a long bus ride and was in need of an adult beverage-don’t hold it against me).

Jewel Duns River Pool

Jewel Duns River was a beautiful resort, as I entered the facility (which had no doors by the way); I was greeted with cold towels, and a drink, which was just what I needed-considering the circumstances. My room was ready and I had an ocean view. The receptionist also said my room came with the concierge and they would check on my luggage and bring it to my room. My concierge was Trent Lee, a handsome and helpful young man. It was at least 100 degrees and I desperately wanted to get in the pool. Well I couldn’t, so I settled for food and drinks. I noticed in Jamaica that everyone lets it hang out-big, small, short and tall- the swimsuits and trunks left little to the imagination, but  after a few drinks, you really don’t notice at all. The food at the resort was decent, they had five restaurants (Pizza, Bar and Grill, Italian, Japanese, and a Buffet) plus two swim up bars and three regular bars. The Japanese restaurant was like Benihannas- which I enjoyed the food and ambiance (you have to make reservations-and Trent-lee fulfilled my request). The beach (water was warm) was amazing, workers graciously fixed you chair so you can lie down and relax and would bring you a drink (well maybe it was just me-because other resort goers had to get up and get their own). I spent the majority of my five (5) days at the beach or at the pool, where I got terribly sunburned and had to go to the spa for relief (an Aloe Cooler). The therapist that helped me get relief on my back was Charmelon, she was nice and had compassion toward my pain-so if you ever go to Jewel Duns River and get sunburn-the Aloe Cooler works magic.

Well- its back to reality and back to work-here are a few tips when traveling to Jamaica (1) tip the service workers (they don’t make a lot of money), plus tipping you will get better service (2) if you don’t have kids, stay at an adult only resort-more relaxing, (3) don’t take it personally when the security from your resort ask where you are going, and when will you return-you have to check back in (it’s a safety issue) and (4) get the hotel to get you a cab when you go off the resort, and always get a round trip.

Well my darlings…Stay tuned until my next vacation… Any suggestions?

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards Governors Ball 2015

Once the formalities of the award ceremony were completed, the A-list television stars celebrated their nominations and wins at the first party of the night: The Emmy’s Governors Ball.

The theme for the night, and quite fittingly so was, ‘Reigning With Radiance’. And spotted in all her glamorous radiance was actress and recording artist, Ha Phuong wearing an elegant Quynh Paris floor length gown in fuchsia. Equally as stunning was actress Jennifer Day wearing a contrasting white couture gown. The two A-listers looked as beautiful as they did radiant.

No stranger to being photographed with her contemporaries, Ha Phuong continued to dazzle throughout the night, stopping to pose with actress and TV host Tia Barr, and Grammy nominated and winner of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Regina King. Ha Phuong’s jewelled clutch purse as the perfect accessory looked every bit as impressive as Regina’s trophy. Ha Phuong may not have won an award but with her flawless skin and beautiful pose, she looked every inch a star at the Emmy’s Governors Ball.

Action on Film Festival World Premieres

Several of my films are making their world premiere at the prestigious Action on Film (AOF) Festival, which is going on until Sunday, September 27th in scenic Monrovia at the Krikorian Theatres. These films are Strangers In A Book, Seeking Valentina, and Natural Born Filmmakers.

This festival was created by Del Weston, who is also a filmmaker, so he really supports indie filmmakers in our community. And I really feel the sense of community at this festival. I ran into supportive friends from the film festival world and the media like King Bassey, Founder of the Los Angeles Nollywood Film Awards, LA Talk Radio Host Cameron Datzker and journalist and actor Harrison Held.

With my castmates and writer and executive producer of Strangers In A Book. From left to right: Pooneh and Pedram Navab, myself and Kristin West
With my castmates and writer and executive producer of Strangers In A Book. From left to right: Pooneh and Pedram Navab, myself and Kristin West

Working on Strangers In a Book was an interesting experience and I learned so much as I also wore a producer hat on this one in addition to playing the lead role. This film is nominated for Best Guerilla short film at AOF. It was shot entirely in black and white. And has a great soundtrack which enlisted bands from the hip and progressive Italians Do it Better label, such as Chromatics, Desire, and Johnny Jewel which really add to the style of this bold, psychological thriller. Keeping fingers and toes crossed!

Seeking Valentina cast and crew with some industry luminaries like King Bassey, Founder of the Los Angeles Nollywood Film Awards, writer-director Armin Nasseri, Del Weston, Founder of the Action on Film Festival with myself and actress-producer Kristin West

I had a great time working on Seeking Valentina. Kristin and Armin had a crazy shooting schedule, but thankfully for me, my scene was shot in North Hollywood. This film is about an Iranian-American writer (Ali Bavarian), in the pangs of grief, who takes in a mysterious tenant (Kristin West). When she mysteriously disappears, is she a ghost, a hallucination, a dream or a runaway? The subject matter and open-ended ending left a lot of audience members in suspense about who Valentina really was and that was what Nasseri was trying to convey with the film. The film also stars Srinivasa Kapavarapu of Outsourced, Mehlad Gibson, and yours truly of course.

I’m really excited that Natural Born Filmmakers is nominated for a Best Comedy Feature award at AOF. I had a blast working on Natural Born Filmmakers with an ensemble cast of fine folks like my dear friends Gregory Blair and Dawna Lee Heising, which are very talented. I can’t wait to work with them on Garden Party Massacre!

Face Forward Honors Survivors of Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence

Face Forward, a charity that provides pro-bono reconstructive surgery for victims of domestic violence, victims of violent crimes and whom recently added victims of human trafficking, held their 6th annual fundraising gala celebrating survivors which was attended by a star studded roster of celebrities on September 19th. This amazing charity works with organizations from all over the country and newly expanding around the world, to find patients that have overcome the horrific consequences of violent crimes such as domestic violence and human trafficking and would benefit from correcting the physical scars that are still left behind. Dr. David Alessi and his wife and organization founder Deborah Alessi, work tirelessly to identify and transform these victims so that they can leave behind the physical stars to face forward to a new life.

The one and only Chaka Khan...a true icon!
I feel for you! The one and only Chaka Khan…a true icon!

Celebrities that attended included Nelly, “Sugar” Shane Mosley, La Toya Jackson, Luis Guzman, Bonnie Somerville, Marcia Gay Harden, Jo Frost, Ben Hollingsworth, John Savage, Kevin Frazier, Lu Parker, Lana Parrilla, Shaun Toub, Shantel Jackson and performances by Macy Gray and Chaka Kahn lit up the evening and had the crowd up on their feet.

The beautiful LaToya Jackson

The most poignant part of the evening was a story featured by a young woman referenced as NJ who is a survivor of 15 years of sex trafficking, human slavery, drug addiction and violent physical abuse. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house listening to her firsthand account and even more impressive was her attitude of perseverance and optimism for the future magnified by her excitement to work with Face Forward.

Recognition was given to La Toya Jackson for so openly speaking about her personal experience with control and abuse and her inspiring woman of all ages and lifestyles to get out and start over.  LAPD human trafficking division who saved NJ, received recognition for their work in handling these atrocious crimes on humanity. Dr. Karen Kay Imagawa from CHLA, also received an award for the work she does with children who are victims as young as two.

The celebrities themselves were generous not only with their attendance and support but they all made generous donations and offered themselves for fundraising. I am touched that the talent that supported us by attending were so inspired to help that they continued their generosity throughout the night – I am truly grateful,” said founder Deborah Alessi “tonight was really about the survivors, the sponsors and the organizations that help us to do the incredible work we do to change the lives of these survivors” said Deborah Alessi.
